1. Where did the name Chilewich come from?
In 1997, textile designer Sandy Chilewich founded Chilewich in New York City.
In her New York based studio, Sandy Chilewich continues to impress the design world by applying her interest in color and experimentation with fibers to create her signature textile, woven vinyl, in addition to many others. Her innovative use of yarn fuses style and sophistication to create modern, practical and durable tablemats, personal bags, Plynyl woven vinyl floor mats, Shag indoor/outdoor floor mats in an ever expanding assortment. In her tabletop collection alone, Chilewich offers over 100 color and weave combinations.
In addition to the Chilewich collection, Sandy Chilewich, with her husband and business partner Joe Sultan, offer Plynyl wall to wall flooring, tiles and other products available to the contract market, architects and designers only.
2. Where are Chilewich products designed and made?
The Chilewich design studio is located in New York City. Our woven vinyl and tufted products are made in the USA.
3. How long has Chilewich been making woven vinyl products for the home?
Since 2000.
4. What is the advantage to using Chilewich in a hotel or restaurant?
The durability of the yarn, its tremendous design versatility and the fact that it is washable, helps hotels and restaurants reduce both energy and laundry costs while maintaining a sophisticated aesthetic. Tablemats and runners are available in an array of textures and colors and custom sizes are available to fit your requirements such as non-standard placemats, tray liners and table covers
5. What differentiates Chilewich from the copies in the market?
Chilewich is designed in NYC and all Chilewich woven vinyl products are produced in the USA. All our products are the best quality possible and our tablemats are sealed with special machinery to ensure top edge quality for optimal lifespan of product.
There are those who copy Sandy’s designs and produce copies in China. These copies have absolutely no design integrity, are horrible quality and are simply copies of the original Chilewich design. The quality of the yarns, finishing and ultimate durability will never be up to the high standards of Chilewich products. We have had many clients come back to order Chilewich after admitting they made a mistake by buying the cheap copies in place of our product. The copies do not last and quickly prove themselves to be inferior to our high quality.

7. What are the tablemats made of?
The majority of the Chilewich table mat collection is made of woven vinyl.
Spun Vynyl is made of drizzled liquid vinyl heat set into a textile.
Pressed Vinyl is made through a molding process.
8. Does the color go away over time?
No
9. Where are the tablemats made?
With the exception of Pressed Vinyl Placemat collection and the 100% Linen Napkin, all our products are made in the USA
10. How do you wash the placemats?
Wipe clean with soap, water and a sponge. Air Dry.
Scrub stubborn stains with a medium bristle brush and bleach based cleanser and rinse.
Do not iron.
Machine wash (dish washer or clothes washer) not recommended.
11. Can I wash the tablemats in the dishwasher?
We do not recommend this as high heat in the dishwasher could affect the integrity of the product.
12. How do you remove a tough stain?
Scrub stubborn stains with a medium bristle brush and bleach based cleanser and rinse.
13. Up to what temperature will a tablemat resist heat?
It is difficult to provide an exact temperature that our place mats will resist heat because the weight of the “hot” plate or serving dish would have a direct effect.
Generally, avoid high heat and do not remove something from a flame and place directly on your tablemat.
We sell placemats to thousands of restaurants around the world that serve hot plates and rarely, if ever, receive this complaint.
14. Can I cut them to the size I want?
No. We have a special process to finish the edge of the mats to ensure longevity of use and quality of the edge. If they are cut you risk exposing the polyester core of the yarn which will give the edge a "fuzzy" quality and look horrible. To meet your specific needs, custom sizes are available.
15. Will the placemats protect your table from stains?
No. Our mats are woven and water and other liquids will go through them. It is always a good idea to clean up a spill quickly if you need to avoid damage to the surface below our placemat.
16. Can I use the tablemats outside?
Yes. Our placemats will not fade in the sun and are perfect for outdoor use.
17. Do they blow away if used outside?
Our placemats are light and could blow away in a strong wind if not set.
18. Do you make custom tray liners for room service trays?
Yes
19. What is the minimum order for custom sizes?
We request a minimum order quantity of 100 pieces per size/weave/color.
20. What are the size limitations for custom sizes?
Please see current Hospitality Catalog or our website for customization limitations.
21. What colors and weaves are available for custom sizes?
Please see current Hospitality Catalog or our website for customization limitations.
22. What is the lead-time for custom sizes?
Production requires 2 weeks minimum lead-time + transportation to your destination.
23. What is the average lifetime in a restaurant compared to traditional fabric placemats?
Traditional cloth placemats or tablecloths need to be laundered regularly and incur high washing bills. Chilewich placemats can be easily wiped off or washed in the sink and usually last 2 years if properly cared for and depending on amount of use.
24. How long do Chilewich tablemats last in a hotel or restaurant?
If properly cared for, typically 2 years.
25. My tablemat looks slightly crooked. Is it faulty or irregular?
Due to the natural bow and skew of a woven product our placemats may have a slightly crooked appearance on occasion. There is a 3/8'' (1 cm) +/- size tolerance allowed in either direction from the size as listed on the price list.
26. Are Chilewich designs legally protected by copyright?
Yes. With the exception of Basketweave, Spun Vynyl and Woven Lattice all of our placemat designs are US and China copyright protected.
27. Does Chilewich have any protection against the copies?
Yes. Copyright protection in combination with unfair competition law have won us many battles against infringement cases. International law varies by country and if you see copies in the market please bring it to your local sales representative’s attention with details of WEAVE, COLORS and VENDOR/STORE NAME and LOCATION so we can address the problem directly.
Legal battles are very costly and time consuming. As a company our stance and focus is to concentrate on staying ahead of the competition and provide the BEST quality, choice and design we can.
In addition, be sure everyone knows Chilewich was the pioneer, we continue to be the innovators and that our brand and products are synonymous with top design and quality. We are the real thing.

29. Are Shag indoor/outdoor mats resistant to mold and mildew?
Yes
30. Can you leave them outside in the rain day in and day out?
Yes.
31. Do the Shag floor mats absorb water?
No
32. How do I care for my Shag floor mat?
Vacuum, shake out or hose off to clean. Hang to dry.
33. Are Shag floor mats available in custom sizes?
No
34. What are Plynyl floor mats?
Plynyl Floor Mats are the perfect alternative to traditional carpets or area rugs. They are woven vinyl fabric bonded to a soft polyurethane cushion backing. They are durable, easy to maintain and are stain and water resistant. Plynyl Floor Mats are widely used around the world in residential and commercial environments alike.
35. Are Plynyl floor mats abrasion resistant?
Yes. They are very durable.
36. What are the Plynyl floor mats made of?

37. Where are they made?
Made in the USA
38. How do I care for my Plynyl floor mat?
Vacuum or mop to keep clean.
39. How do you remove a tough stain?
Spray a mild detergent solution on the spot and leave for one minute. Brush the stain with a medium bristled scrub brush and then blot with paper towels or a mop. Repeat until discoloration is removed.
40. Are Plynyl floor mats available in custom sizes?
Yes. Please see price list or contact your local agent/representative for details.
41. Can you use the Plynyl floor mats in the bathroom or kitchen?
Yes, but they are best used on a dry surface and should be air dried if the backing gets wet.
42. Can you use them outside?
Plynyl floor mats are best suited for dry, covered surfaces.
43. What is the white fuzz on the edge of the mats?
Over time you may see white threads along the edge of the floor mat. This is a normal occurrence inherent to the nature of woven vinyl as our yarn has a white fiber core.
44. How do I get rid of the "fuzz" on the edge of my mat?
Trim loose threads with scissors. Trimming will not damage the floor mat or cause it to unravel.
45. Does the white fuzz mean my floor mat is falling apart?
No
46. My floor mat looks crooked. Is it faulty or irregular?
Due to the nature of a woven textile, on occasion our mats have a slightly crooked appearance.
If you flip the mat over and the black arrows printed in the backing run parallel to the edge of the mat it is perfect quality and the crooked effect is due to the nature of the fabric.
47. Can I glue the precut floor mats on the floor as flooring?
We do not recommend this. Chilewich offers custom size floor mats if you wish to request a quote from your local agent/representative. Our wall to wall flooring intended for glue down installation is available to the contract market, architects and designers only.
48. Can Plynyl floor mats be used on floors with radiant heating systems?
Yes
49. What temperature heat can the floor mats withstand from radiant heat?
